The exhibition
Curated by Solti presents Héritage, with Bruno Privat, Hervé Bohnert and a selection of art brut.
Bruno Privat makes his own pinhole cameras. The process demands slowness: light exposes the negative for several minutes, sometimes more than an hour. This exposure time blurs outlines and deepens the blacks. The fish, the bird or the landscape leave anecdote behind. The image becomes more unstable, more physical.
Hervé Bohnert works from old sculptures, devotional images and found objects. He diverts them through additions, removals or displacements. A crucifix, a piece of furniture or a figure of a saint passes through his studio, then changes status. Religious, popular or domestic memory tips into an ambiguous imaginary, crossed by death as by a form of irony.
Art brut gives the whole its vanishing point. The artists presented invent their own systems of forms, sometimes to the point of obsession. The exhibition does not seek to make these practices uniform. It brings out affinities: patient work, a taste for detail, the need to invent a world from very little.
At Au Médicis, a gallery on rue de Médicis facing the Luxembourg Gardens, Héritage brings photography, sculpture and art brut together without confusing them. The works keep their autonomy. Their proximity highlights shared questions: what we gather, what we transform, what returns in another form.
